But your journey goes beyond the classroom. Oaxaca offers a unique backdrop for your TEFL adventure:
Culture & Traditions: Indigenous heritage, colorful textiles, and a strong community spirit.
Food Paradise: Ranked #1 in Mexico for gastronomy — enjoy mole negro, tlayudas, and artisanal chocolate.
Artisan Markets: Vibrant mercados with handwoven rugs, embroidered clothing, pottery, leather goods, and the famous alebrijes. Festivals & Celebrations: World-renowned events like the Guelaguetza and Día de los Muertos.
Weekend Adventures: Release turtles in Puerto Escondido, hike Hierve el Agua, explore Monte Albán, or relax in San José del Pacífico.

Oaxaca is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world, home to 16 indigenous groups and over 30 languages still spoken today. As an English teacher, you’ll join a cultural exchange that connects people and communities.

Teaching English in Oaxaca, Mexico offers the perfect mix of meaningful work, cultural immersion, and lifestyle freedom. With its growing tourism and international community, there’s a steady demand for English teachers—especially for those with a TEFL or TESOL certification.

Most visitors can easily start their journey with a 180-day tourist visa, which allows them to explore opportunities before applying for a work visa. Many private schools in Oaxaca are open to sponsoring work visas, making the process simple for foreign teachers.

Schools range from small local academies to larger bilingual institutions, offering opportunities to teach children, teenagers, and professionals. Teachers can also combine in-person classes with online teaching, enjoying flexible schedules and extra income.

Oaxaca’s low cost of living, strong expat community, and laid-back lifestyle make it one of Mexico’s most attractive destinations for teachers and digital nomads. With its mountain views, colonial charm, and rich traditions, it’s easy to live comfortably and feel at home while gaining international teaching experience.

On average, English teachers earn 13,000–25,000 MXN per month in private schools, with higher pay in universities or bilingual institutions. Online teachers can make $10–25 USD per hour, depending on their platform and experience.

Hiring peaks in August and January, aligning with Mexico’s academic calendar. While Spanish is not required, learning the basics will make daily life and cultural experiences even more rewarding.

Overall, Oaxaca offers an excellent balance of career opportunity, culture, and personal freedom — a place where teachers can grow professionally while enjoying one of Mexico’s most colorful and welcoming cities.
