FIVE DON’TS WHEN VISITING QATAR

Qatar has become the richest country in the world. It attracts visitors and people who would like to work there due to the amazing salaries that are paid in this country. So, we even have a TEFL training center in Doha to allow prospective TEFL trainees to get certified next to the best-paying job opportunities.

With all of that said, Qatar is an Islamic country. As people coming from different cultures, we must learn to follow the rules while staying there. Qatar exercises much more freedom within Islam than other Islamic nations, yet, there are certain don’ts.

1. Don’t Take Photos or Record a Video in Public.
It is not permitted to take photos of people or video-record them. Likewise, you cannot photograph religious and military sites. You risk being arrested and jailed.

If you are a reporter, you must obtain a permit from the Qatar News Agency to bring your photographic equipment.

2. Don’t Take Illegal Products to Qatar.
Illegal products include religious books, pork, drugs, alcohol, and videos of lewd content. You will be screened thoroughly upon entry into the country. Don’t cut your visit short or risk imprisonment because you carry any of the listed products with you.

3. Don’t Dress Inappropriately.
As an Islamic nation, Qatar has a dress code. You don’t have to wear what Qataris wear, but your knees and shoulders must be covered all the time, even while driving.

4. Don’t Drink and Get Drunk.
Alcohol consumption in public is not allowed in Qatar. You can get it in a few bars and restaurants if you show your ID.

5. Don’t Be Rude.
Being rude includes the following behaviors:
  • Talking to an unknown woman
  • Displaying affection in public
  • Posting culturally insensitive materials online
  • Showing the soles of your feet to other people
